Job Description:
About the Position This position may include outpatient work at
several of the regional clinics and programs throughout the county,
and/or inpatient work at a 16-bed psychiatric health facility,
providing psychiatric care to a variety of age groups.The Mental
Health Services Act is introducing a variety of new and innovative
programs and the psychiatrist will have the opportunity to take an
active role in their implementation. San Luis Obispo has been
designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area in the Mental
Health Field by HRSA. The National Health Services Corps offers
loan repayment assistance to support qualified health care
providers who choose to take their skills where they're most
needed. We are also able to sponsor psychiatrists under the J-1
waiver program as they work towards obtaining the H-1B visa
contingent upon approval by ICE. Under direction, provides
psychiatric diagnostic and therapeutic services; and does other
related work as required.Typical Tasks and Representative
DutiesConducts medical and psychiatric evaluations; makes diagnoses
and prescribes treatment; conducts individual and group therapy;
consults and cooperates with professional individuals and programs;
dictates psychiatric records and reports; reviews and approves all
intakes and case reviews and treatment plans; participates in
Utilization Review/Quality Assurance activities; does educational
work in promoting mental health in the community; participates in
professional development activities.Employment Standards Knowledge
of:General medicine and psychiatry; Community Mental Health system
and management; skill in the evaluation and treatment of mental
illness; psychopharmacology; community needs and resources in the
field of mental health.Ability to:Supervise, establish and maintain
effective working relationships with clients, staff, and other
professionals in the field, interested organizations, and the

Candidate Education and ExperiencePossession of a valid California
license as a physician and surgeon at the time of appointment; and
evidence of having completed three years of graduate training in
psychiatry in a program approved by the American Medical
Association or the American Osteopathic Association.NOTE: Private
Patients: The Staff Psychiatrist is not authorized to engage in any
private practice on County premises or to conduct private business
during assigned work hours, unless specifically authorized by
separate written approval of the Board of Supervisors.Licenses and
CertificatesCertain positions within this classification may
require driving. When driving is an essential function of the
position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license will be required at
