Handles high-risk obstetrics. Transfers out for major maternal or
fetal complications. Works on patients with major cardiac issues or
babies needing surgery. The unit has 18 LDRP rooms, 6 triage
spaces, and 8 overflow beds. Includes 2 OR rooms where nurses
self-circulate. Ratios follow state guidelines: 4:1 couplets, 3:1
stable antepartums, 2:1 for labor and delivery, and 1:1 for
deliveries. A second NRP nurse is present at every birth, so the
nurse is not the only nurse in delivery. Uses electronic medical
records including Cerner, fetal links, and HUGS for infant
security. The nurse manager is the supervisor covering 24/7. There
is a resource nurse who assists with breaks. Weekend requirement
includes working 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks. Requires working
both a major and a minor holiday. Scrubs are provided for labor and
delivery, but navy blue scrubs are needed daily. Removes fetal
monitoring. No ventilators are present. Obstetric and anesthesia
coverage is available 24/7. IV team must be able to start their own
IVs. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7.
Nurses may be placed on standby as needed. If called in while on
standby, the response time is 30 minutes. Shifts available are 7 AM
to 7 PM. All nurses will perform labor and delivery, postpartum,
C-sections, and women's health. Floor specific orientation consists
of 3 shifts as the baseline on the unit. Online training for all
obstetric nurses is part of the process. Training is also provided
by perinatology safety specialists. Common diagnoses and types of
patients include labor and delivery, recovery, postpartum, women's
health patients, and high-risk obstetrics. Transfers out for major
maternal or fetal complications. Unit processes approximately 250
births per month. A NICU charge nurse and respiratory therapist
attend all high-risk deliveries. The facility has a level 2 NICU
in-house. There are no block certifications. Perinatal safety
initiatives are strongly emphasized. No elective deliveries occur
before 39 weeks. Evidence-based practice is crucial. Pitocin
checklists and maternal mental health screenings are utilized.
Efforts are focused on reducing the number of low-risk primary
C-sections. Pre-eclampsia initiatives are also in place. The unit
conducts 100% chart audits. Experience with Cerner charting is
preferred. The facility is designated as baby-friendly, promoting
immediate skin-to-skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding as

only permanent staff perform triage. The cancellation policy allows
for shift cancellations as specified. 5 Benefits of Travel Nursing
