About the Position The County of San Luis Obispo Administrative Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Information Specialist III.Under general direction, incumbents in this classification perform a variety of professional-level communications, crisis management, and media relations duties. In addition, provide the public, media, and County employees with accurate, timely and consistent information, advise, and assist County management in public information and relations activities, respond to media requests for information, and may be assigned specific responsibilities related to the ongoing management of communications on County websites and social media platforms.Public Information Specialist III is the advanced journey level in the series of Public Information Specialist I/II/III. This classification is distinguished from Public Information Specialist II in that Public Information Specialist III positions serve a prominent strategic role in developing communication and public affairs plans to support long-term objectives. Incumbents may serve as a spokesperson for elected officials or department heads, participating in interviews and presentations in television, radio, print interviews and other media. Incumbents in this classification are expected to use considerable discretion and will advise the Chief Administrative Officer and Board of Supervisors. The work requires a comprehensive knowledge of current social and political issues as well as communications theory and vehicles.Click here for the full job description. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be an organized, self-motivated individual who is well versed in public communication practices and techniques. The successful candidate will have a knowledge of the methods and techniques used in evaluating public attitude regarding operations and issues and the determination of public affair needs, social, political, economic, environmental, and related issues influencing local government functions and activities, and applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media. In addition, incumbents in this position will have the ability to effectively handle political and sensitive issues. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A combination of education, training and experience which could provide the required knowledge and abilities listed. This typically includes: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, communication, public relations, or closely related area of study. (Job-related experience performing professional level communications, crisis management, and media relations duties may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year addition, four years of full-time, paid, increasingly responsible experience involving public relations, public information and/or marketing, preferably in a public agency sector setting.
