Job Description Summary

The Student Success and Support Programs Division at Cuesta College is looking for a Full-Time Tenure Track Counselor/Promise Coordinator. While the successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to coordinate the Cuesta Promise Program and counsel students through the calendar year, the successful candidate will also be expected to serve the college and department in various capacities, outlined further below.


  • Provide leadership for the Cuesta Promise Program with a goal to increase Cuesta Promise awards to local graduating high school students;
  • Provide direct services to Cuesta Promise students utilizing technology tools and resources;
  • Coordinate with local feeder high schools on strategies for implementation to prepare students for post-secondary study;
  • Coordinate focused and scaled supports for students across the college through collaborative interdepartmental approaches;
  • Support in the work to formalize a connection with dual enrollment students across our county with a pathway to Cuesta concept;
  • Create capacity to direct efforts to our cohort of roughly 1500 Cuesta Promise students each year to successfully complete units and make progress towards degree completion through the coordination of programs such as the Summer Academy or Early Alert;
  • Implement support and guidance strategies to increase the number of Cuesta Promise students educational goal completion rates within the duration of the Promise award - 2 years;
  • Collect and analyze data on student progression through to completion of educational goals; present to appropriate college constituent groups;
  • Participate in accreditation, program review, and processes for institutional planning, including but not limited to the support of Counseling department Student Service Outcomes (SSO) development and assessment;
  • Assume the responsibility as a faculty member for accomplishing the goals of Cuesta College;
  • Be cognizant of the mission, goals, and objectives of Cuesta College, using them as broad guidelines in counseling and assisting students;
  • Adhere to the regularly established work week as established by the administration;
  • Assignments may be day, evening, weekend or online at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, or other sites within San Luis Obispo County.

  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, from an accredited institution;


  • Bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees above from an accredited institution;


  • Active license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);


  • The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link listed in Additional Information);


  • A valid Community College credential in the discipline.


  • Have recent successful experience counseling at the California Community College level in the last four (4) years;
  • Well qualified to counsel a diverse student population;
  • Experience coordinating a program/department;
  • Professional work experience in the field of counseling, including excellence in written an oral communication;
  • Strong preparation in evaluation of transcripts, research and articulation;
  • Bilingual Spanish and English (oral and written);
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.


Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Counselor

Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to experience, training or achievement that the candidate has:

  • Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in counseling and in collaborating with community organizations and/or professional organizations and partnership development;
  • The ability to continuously evaluate and improve counseling methods;
  • The ability to use counseling methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners;
  • The ability to use counseling methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity;
  • The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic and language backgrounds;
  • Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in counseling, including online counseling;
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the mission and objectives of the California Community Colleges;
  • Evidence of commitment to, and active participation in, professional development in the field of counseling.

Evidence of Effectiveness as a Coordinator

  • The ability to collaborate with different programs and across the institution to create a seamless student experience;
  • The ability to stay up-to-date with current student success research;
  • The ability to assess program efficacy, analyze data, and make recommendations to continuously improve the program.

Evidence of Effectiveness as a Colleague

  • The ability, initiative and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance counseling and promote student success and completion;
  • Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of counseling sessions through enthusiastic contributions to the department, division and college activities.

Desirable Qualifications

Subject Matter Preparation:

  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in higher education and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's counseling practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students;
  • Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the division and on campus;
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive counseling;
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices;
  • Knowledge of counseling and guidance principles, techniques and procedures; academic requirements for community college and transfer to four-year institutions; community college onboarding processes, job market, career trends and requirements, electronic data entry and record keeping practices;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking and writing ability;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals and in making presentations to groups;
  • Ability to work with and assist students having a great range of skills, motivation, and educational goals; review and evaluate counseling needs and formulate recommendations as appropriate; work with underrepresented students.

Selected applicants will be asked to interview via Zoom for a full-time tenure track position as a Counselor/Promise Coordinator in the Student Success and Support Programs Division on either Tuesday, June 22 or Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

The selected applicant will begin their full-time counselor/coordinator assignment in the 2021-2022 school year which begins July 1, 2021.
